What is the Hamthology, anyway?
Simply put, it’s an anthology of short comics with an emphasis on art. It is a community effort from the pOnju forums to create a project where talented artists and writers can work together to create a fusion between a comic book or graphic novel, and an art book. Each story is between 7 and 15 pages long and share a common theme, unique to each edition.
Wait… Hamthology?
That’s… not really a question, but okay. The pOnju forums are also known as The Piggy Farm. While work was progressing, someone called it the ‘hamthology’ rather than the ‘pOnju print anthology’, and everyone else liked it so much that the name stuck. “Hamthology” came from a portmanteau of the community’s name, and the word anthology. That’s how it got its name.
Who are the creators of the Hamthology?
The creators are members of the pOnju forum community; while the artwork and storytelling in the book is generally of anime/manga style, each story has a distinct and personal style which we allow to let shine.
The Hamthology is a place to bring a diverse range of talent together into one project. The skill level ranges from intermediate to advanced. Many of the artists are veterans and professionals who have published work before. For others, this is their first time having their work published. The Hamthology group’s priority is to foster an environment for hard working, creative and enthusiastic individuals to come together, help each other out, and on a whole participate in a large-scale team effort.
While the stories are written in the English language, the Hamthology includes talent from all over the world. As the pOnju forum is truly international, it follows that so is the spirit of the Hamthology.
What kind of stories and content does the book have?
The participants were asked to put their heart and enthusiasm into whatever they created; on top of that, each Hamthology volume has a binding theme throughout its stories; for Volume 1, we asked our participants to interpret and explore the idea of going on a quest. Other than that, they were pretty much free to do whatever they felt like. The Hamthology includes action, drama, comedy, mystery, romance, fantasy, sci-fi, and everything in between!
The content is original material that does not require you to know characters or settings beforehand. Simply put, you can pick it up and read it just like that. The content is suitable ages 10 to adult. There is some mild action and language and some mature themes, but overall is intended to be an all-ages affair.
Where can I buy a copy, and how much will it cost?
The Hamthology will be primarily available at some anime and comic/manga conventions. The best way to find out is to check out the page for the edition you’re interested in, and find the info there, along with pricing and availability. A list of conventions the Hamthology is available at is maintained here. The expected price for books sold at conventions is $10 US.
